In June, the government signalled it was working towards privatizing the residences and care of some of Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens at group homes operating in Calgary and Edmonton.
The guardians and families of these children and adults with developmental disabilities (PDD) have been pleading with Minister Sawhney to listen to their concerns since June. They may as well have been yelling at clouds.
In July, when members and allies attempted to deliver a petition signed by thousands of Albertans to Minister Sawhney’s constituency office, her staff locked the doors. As one of the guardians told us in an interview, the way they have been treated – in the middle of a pandemic – has been nothing short of cruel.
Edmonton and area activists are invited* to join them and the workers who care for their loved ones at the steps of the Legislature this Tuesday to deliver a message so loud there will be no way the minister doesn’t hear it.
