Dear Sisters, Brothers and Friends:

May 1st is marked throughout the world as May Day or International Workers’ Day. This is the day when the workers of the world take to the streets in major cities around the globe demanding justice, fairness, and dignity for all.

Workers in Alberta and around the world share a common struggle to change the unjust economic system that is characterized by privatization, unstable hours, short term contracts, and low wages. These struggles are further exacerbated by barriers like racial and gender discrimination, immigration status, criminalization, occupation, war, and the climate crisis. The result is precarity, income instability, underemployment, unemployment, forced migration and poverty.

We are inviting members to join us for a webinar on Monday, May 1st at 6:30pm to celebrate International Workers’ Day, and to learn more about how workers in Alberta are connected to global struggles in the Philippines, Palestine and elsewhere.

The webinar is co-organized by CUPE Alberta and Local 40.

CUPE Alberta is committed to international solidarity. Members interested to learn more about our new international solidarity committee can contact Clay Gordon via email at cupe40president@gmail.com.
